As you learned in your interview, at Greystone we have two types of staff: Cabin and Program, and any of our staff can serve in either role for any session throughout the summer. The heart of both roles is exactly the same - you will be working hard to serve our community and love these campers… and have a lot of fun doing it! You can read all about Program Staff here, but this page will tell you everything you need to know about Cabin Staff.
Before each session starts, we’ll announce cabin placement, and some of our staff will be on Cabin Staff with a co-counselor. You’ll move into that cabin and start preparing to love-on your group of 8-12 campers.
Those girls are your people for the session! You’ll spend all your free-time with them, enjoy some meals together, and hang out with them during Morning Assembly and Evening Programs. You will help them get ready for the day in the morning and tuck them in to bed after a devotion at night (yes, even the oldest girls - they love it!). You will be a combination of a mom, big sister, and best friend to them all session long. Anything they need, you are their girl!
It is such a privilege to be with these girls throughout every moment of their camp experience, from giving them their nametag to hugging goodbye on Closing Day. You are going to get to know them and their unique personalities so well, and will love having dance parties, hearing their funny questions at tuck-ins, and seeing them grow closer with each other and with God. You get to go deep with a small group of girls.
All the things that make it so good - spending all your time with your girls and getting to know them - can also be hard when you get tired! There will be times when you’re tempted to linger with your counselor friends instead of hurrying back to your cabin at free period. Your campers are not always going to get along, and there will be girls you struggle to love. Some days you are not going to want to braid another head of hair, or change that camper’s sheets one more time. It is the picture of selflessness - your campers have to come first, all the time, and that is hard!
But that being said, we are here to help you and be your support as you do this hard, worthwhile work. We will have your back and be here to help you. Great counselors ask for help!
In addition to spending time with and taking care of their campers on a daily basis, cabin staff also have some extra tasks to complete at certain times. Before Opening Day, you will get your cabin ready and make nametags as well as a few other crafts for your girls. You’ll also write a short note or two to your campers’ families, keep your Group Leader updated on anything going on in your cabin, and make sure your space is clean at the end of the session, among other things. Having a co-counselor is so nice because you can divide up the work!
The most important thing to know right now is that we are one staff team, and whether you’re Cabin Staff, Program Staff, or Men Staff, we’ll all be jumping in to help each other all summer long. We will teach you everything you need to know once you get here, so don’t stress! Just come in ready to serve our community in any way you can, and you will have an incredible summer.
Our cabin assignments switch every session, so you may be on Cabin Staff for a session and then on Program Staff for a session. Some staff members may stay on Cabin or Program Staff the whole time you’re here! It all comes down to your requests and camp’s needs.
You’ll have the chance to request Cabin or Program Staff before each session. If you request to be on Cabin Staff, we’ll also want to know what age groups you’d like to be with and who you might want your co-counselor to be. We want to know what you’re feeling drawn towards, but remember, requests are never guaranteed! Start praying now that the Lord would prepare you for the role He has for you here, and that He would enable you to serve joyfully wherever you are needed.
