If the last time you visited camp was for the 100-year Reunion (or possibly many years before that!), you haven’t been able to enjoy our newest camp structure: The Four-Fold Court, aka “The Fort.” This multi-purpose building was built in 2021 as a way for us to eat meals together amidst our first summer back after COVID.
We needed the space to spread out, and this new building provided that for us. Due to its size, it also provided a rainy day spot for Evening Programs, which had been on the wish list for many years. We’re sure many of you can remember the rainy Decade Dances on the tennis courts…right?!
While we returned to eating in the Dining Hall in 2022, it didn’t mean we neglected this much-loved space. Now, it could finally serve it’s real purpose!
This past summer, the Fort transformed into a multi-use sports and game space. You would see campers playing pickleball, practicing yoga, playing card games, and spending quality time with one another. We even created a “Fort Class” where girls could spend time playing all of the different activities that the Fort had to offer.
We interviewed Julie Sellers, a Main Camp legend and staffer of 16 years, about what it was like to teach this inaugural “Fort Class” this past summer.
Take it away, Julie!
What’s the best part about having Fort class? It allowed campers to mix several classes into one - yoga, card games, pickleball, or whatever they wanted to do that day! The class provided a lot of variety.
How do you think camp has changed now that they have this new building? It’s been so, so lovely to have the option for a covered Evening Program location! Instead of being limited to the Pavilion, which is great for more intimate EPs, camp can now have Lip Syncs, Counselor Talent shows, and anything more suited to a larger space on the stage in the Fort! We also enjoyed church services in the Fort, which was a beautiful setting to hear God’s word while overlooking Lake Edith.
What is the future of the Fort? I’ve heard from our Program Director Ellen-Anne that this space will be used for additional activities (such as basketball or volleyball). Camp is also running a competition to see which activities campers want to see in this space!
Alums, we hope that we can treat you to a game of Pickleball in this new space the next time you’re at camp!
