Just beyond Greystone’s Barn and paddocks lies about 35 acres of camp property that for over 100 years was only enjoyed by the horses and Great Day 5K runners. The property was overgrown and boggy with no discernible path. But underneath all of that was a treasure: the River Trail!
Over the past few years, our maintenance crew cleared the path and cut away the overgrowth. They built up the path (in height) so that when Lake Edith rises, the Trail stays dry. Small crusher stones were used to make the River Trail a surface that campers want to use in many ways. The Trail has now become a staple for cross-country runs, walks with friends, outings with the Dog Camp puppies, and mountain biking adventures.
The best change of all has been using the River Trail for Stumblers. Many of you remember those Sunday mornings filled with 15 laps going round-and-round the crowded track. Now, the spacious River Trail allows for a more enjoyable experience. The Trail is approximately 1.5 miles around, so with just 2 laps and a small stretch on the track, campers can complete the 5K distance that JimDaddy established when he created Stumblers 38 years ago.
The River Trail is flanked by the Green River on one side and beautiful ponds on the other. In addition to gorgeous views of camp, the Trail is also know for its wildlife. Girls have seen turtles, beaver, deer, ducks, geese, egrets, butterflies, wildflowers, horses, and even 2 bald eagles!
The most recent addition to the River Trail is a new bridge connecting the farside of the track to the Trail. With this addition, girls can more easily access the Trail from different spots in camp.
We are thankful to enjoy the River Trail, a true treasure. We hope you all can join us for a Stumblers on the Trail soon!
