It’s bittersweet to officially announce that Katie Miller Grant will retire from her many roles at Greystone after the summer of 2025. She will be missed dearly, but we’re excited to celebrate her this year and honor her incredible legacy in our community!
As you know, Katie has thrived in every area at camp. In her camper years she was honored as team captain, Queen of Love and Beauty, and Best All ‘Round. She then served as a cabin counselor, Head Staff member, and then Director. Katie has brought joy and fun to every part of camp she has touched. Her passion for camp and belief in its mission are evident in everything she does!
Katie founded Junior Camp in 1999, seeing a need for a shorter session to introduce new campers to Greystone. The first Junior Camp was held in August and had 168 campers. By 2017, 350 campers were attending Junior Camp each summer, the ideal size for this starter session.
Thousands of girls have been introduced to Greystone through Junior Camp. They arrive with huge smiles of anticipation and, in the blink of an eye, return home with the hopes of returning to a longer session the next year. It is clear that the session has been a big hit with campers and parents alike and is now a beloved part of our summer. Junior Camp’s success is largely due to Katie’s love of camp, which she shares with the girls. She laughs, claps with delight, and runs (or drives her golf cart) to the next big thing with the same enthusiasm as a first-year camper. Her love of camp is infectious and celebrated by all.
Katie has always looked forward to telling the Junior Camp girls about the Me-Me bird at Council Fire and hearing them wish her a “Happy Birthday” on May 31st, which often fell right in the middle of camp. Each time would bring back memories of previous birthdays spent at camp (Libby and Jim were often distracted by their duties as Directors, sometimes forgetting it was her birthday!). Celebrating her day in her favorite place with the campers and counselors at Junior Camp has always delighted Katie!
In addition to Junior Camp, and with the help of her husband Greg, Katie has managed The Greystone Store for the past several years. Her keen eye, impeccable taste, and love of finding just the right items to offer the campers has helped the Store flourish. We know so many of you have Katie to thank for your favorite Greystone merchandise and gear - not to mention those legendary Alumnae Reunion Store sales!
Katie would tell you what a tremendous blessing it was when she moved back to camp in 2011 to spend time with Libby for the last years of her life. During this time, while also running Junior Camp, Katie selflessly served as her mother’s personal chef and primary caregiver. It was a sweet time for them both.
So now, as she prepares for her last year as Junior Camp Director and The Greystone Store Manager, we celebrate Katie’s love of camp and the enormous impact she has had on our community. We will miss her in 2026, but we know that we will have lots of visits to look forward to in the years to come. Katie, Greg, Pippi, and Max are moving to Hiawasee, GA where they are looking forward to spending time with each other and their many grandchildren!
Thank you, Katie, for making Greystone a better place and honoring the legacy of your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents so well. We love you and appreciate you so much!
