If you ask an alum from the early 90s or before about her years at camp, chances are she’s going to bring up the bathrooms, or more specifically, the shower houses! No matter how you felt about schlepping all your things to the shower, pulling on the chain for the cold water, or chatting with your friend in the stall next door, those memories tend to stay with you (and bring a lot of laughs even years later).
Our campers now don’t know a time when their showers weren’t in their cabins, but the current bathrooms have their own pros and cons. They are bright and functional, but 10+ girls sharing one shower and one toilet is a lot! Bathroom renovations have been high on the list of camper requests recently, and since it’s been almost 20 years since many of them were updated, it felt like the right time to start making some updates.
We started planning for these new bathrooms in 2022 and completed the first four cabins just in time for summer 2024, launching a multi-year renovation process that started with Tentalows 11 and 12. Bungalows 1-4 will be completed this year, followed by Tentalows 6-10 in 2026, Tentalows 1-5 in 2027, the Castle in 2028, and all other cabins by 2029. Updating all the bathrooms in camp is a long process, but our Maintenace crew will be experts by the time it’s all over!
We spent a lot of time coming up with the ideal bathroom layout that will serve our community for the next 20+ years. All bathrooms will have two sinks, two showers, a toilet, changing areas, a closet, and plenty of cubbies for storage.
Nothing at Greystone is done without intention, and we made sure to choose paint colors, fixtures, materials, and lighting that will be sturdy, easy to clean, and bright for years to come. Many adjustments were made throughout the process, and we’re changing a few things in our second round of renovations this year to make sure it’s all just right.
These new bathrooms were the talk of Tentalow row this summer, and there’s already a lot of excitement to see which cabins get the refresh next (now, you have the inside scoop!). As you can see, a lot has changed since the shower houses you might remember. The conversations that happen while you’re brushing your teeth, though, haven’t changed at all!
