We’ve gotten a few calls about how to register for next summer. An understandable question because on our website, all of next year’s sessions indicate a Wait List. Don’t be concerned, this does not apply to you! All 2024 enrolled campers will be invited to enroll in any session they are eligible to attend during what we call our Early Bird period. This program will start 11 days after August Camp ends (August 21st) and will end one week later (August 28th). During this timeframe, you may enroll in any of our sessions for next year. No need to worry about this at this point. We’ll send several emails before and during the Early Bird Week so you don’t miss the opportunity. This is just a heads-up in case you are wondering. Save the dates!

With so many new families attending August Camp, I think it might be helpful to tell you a little bit about Breakfast Club and why we do it. I feature it in the details section of the Blog but haven’t really explained its purpose. It is an important part of our daily routine and fulfills an important role. Breakfast Club is remembered by most of the girls, and its themes are important, so it’s worth a little history lesson.

My father invented Breakfast Club in the 1970s so he would have a role in camp life. He married into the business (my mother was the camp director) and quickly learned that he needed to do something that would give him a place in this tight-knit community, something that would be fun and significantly impact the camper experience.

My mother, as Director, managed the campers and counselors. My grandmother led camp traditions (Vespers, Council Fire, Honor Council, Queens Ball, etc.). So Daddy identified ways to add a new twist to the daily routine. He noticed that breakfast was always a subdued meal (almost boring… apparently our girls aren’t generally “morning people”). He thought breakfast could use some fun (was great at telling jokes) and provided a forum to reinforce the camp philosophy. Our mission “To Glorify God” was hard for him to describe and he thought he could condense the mission into something more concrete. He knew a verse of scripture that encapsulated his vision: Luke 2:52 “And the child grew in wisdom and stature, in favor with God and man.” This became our Four Fold Philosophy: Growth Mentally, Physically, Spiritually, Socially… Voila, Breakfast Club was born!

His life experience taught him to actively improve (grow) every day… that this was how he made every day a Great Day. That truly great days glorify God. He encouraged camper’s to adopt this attitude the minute they woke up (clap your hands and say “It’s Going to be a Great Day and I feel terrific!”) and ended a brief talk with a silly “dad joke”. It made for a compelling improvement to the camper experience, the girls loved it, and we became more effective in our mission. We carry on the tradition to this day.

The sun is shining and it looks like we will have wonderful weather for the rest of August Camp. Our daily routine work is a thing of wonder as the girls move as one whenever the bugle blows or the bell rings. Campers and counselors alike sing camp songs loudly and quickly get quiet when we make announcements. It is a great day and we feel terrific.

We will end the day with the Counselor Talent Show, which everyone (campers and counselors alike) are REALLY excited about. The campers love seeing counselors on stage doing silly skits and the counselors love performing for the girls. By this point in the summer their acts are well honed and very good. It will be the best counselor talent show of the summer and we can’t wait!
