The Fourth

The Fourth of July is always a big deal at camp. We dress up in gaudy garb, play American-themed music, march around, have a carnival, and shoot fireworks. The girls love it and so do I… it is fun! It also means something.

Dr. Sevier founded Greystone during the wave of patriotic fervor that followed World War I. The United States played a pivotal role in that conflict, transforming our national identity from follower to leader in world events. I can only imagine how the Fourth was celebrated back then, but I think it was a very serious and very inspirational day for the girls. Jump forward 20 years, the world was once again at war, and our country was fighting for freedom. Most of our camp dads were directly involved in the armed forces, and the camp would have been captivated with the status of the conflict. VJ Day was August 15, 1945. Dr. Sevier missed that glorious summer, having died in 1944, but my grandmother used the high spirits of that summer to spring Greystone into some of its best years as a camp.

All this to say, Greystone has always reflected an optimistic perspective on the state of our country. We love what God has done for us and the world through our republic. Granted, we are not a perfect country. There are many injustices that we have participated in… but patriotism is a question of attitude. At camp, we look for the good in every situation, and our country has a lot of good. On balance, it is a great country, and we should proudly participate in making her a better one in time. So we celebrate the fourth with exuberant pride!

Classes go on as normal, but everything feels amped up with the various costumes and decorations. We will watch the carnival preparations throughout the day with interest… Carnival Al will deliver trailers packed with the various inflatable rides that we love, Jimmy “Three Fingers” will deliver a trailer filled with fireworks, food tents will be set up in two areas, and the nurses will be ready for a hundred girls needing Tums before bed.

All in all, it is a great day (one of our favorites). We hope you are having a Great Day too!
