Tonight we will celebrate the end of camp with a Banquet, an event keenly anticipated by the campers, often ranking as their favorite event of the entire summer.
It will be a wonderful ending to a wonderful session… beginning with a fun play in the Pavilion before dinner (the counselors performing an adapted story, complete with costumes, singing, and choreography), Banquet favors, a joyful last walk down the lower road, then entering the Dining Hall one by one. We will serve a meal that they LOVE (chicken strips, mac and cheese, fruit, broccoli salad) in a place that has been lavishly decorated. Toasts, awards, presents at every seat… it is wonderful. Everything culminates with the announcement of the final team scores and the shockingly loud roar of exuberant campers. So much fun!
But first, we enjoy one last day. Perfect weather, wonderful friends, fun classes, and everyone is on their best behavior. We have one more day to spend with our buddies and we are not going to waste it! Our last hours will be marked by expressions of gratitude, joyous laughter, spirited tetherball & jimball games, and (of course) BEST EVER dance parties. It is going to be a Great Day!
At Closing Vespers last night I told the Me-Me bird story that my Grandmother first used to illustrate unselfishness seventy years ago. It is silly, but the girls love it. They sat in absolute silence, relishing the sacred space of the old council fire location. Hundreds of awards were handed out and a wonderful Council Fire was followed by a stunningly beautiful Closing Vespers on the pageant.
The girls kept their candles and many resolved to tuck them away in a box of camp memories just like Dr. Margaret did 40 years ago (as you may remember, she only came to June Camp but was deeply impacted by the experience). We hope that in the months and years to come these candles will elicit the lessons, memories, and feelings of Greystone.
Thank you once again for your support and encouragement, for sharing your girls, for reading the Blog.
We are grateful.
