We awoke to light rain falling on tin roofs; snuggled under blankets and wondering what to do next. Do we double down on this lazy feeling and sleep for another hour, or do we roll out of bed to run Stumblers? Tough choice for the counselors but easy for the campers.
Counselors highly value an hour of sleep on a rainy Sunday morning… campers, not so much. The campers would grab the chance to run the River Trail with their friends, even if a T-shirt was not at stake. It is just plain fun, so much so I wonder if we could work it into our everyday camp routine. Super easy to access, very scenic (views of camp, river, lake, mountains, valleys), educational (5 kinds of ducks, 3 kinds of turtles, lots of waterfowl, beaver, otter, deer), and good for the soul (nice place to meditate and have DMC’s). Camp is better with such a place!
The rain that we are experiencing today is much less than expected. The big rains associated with this tropical depression are South of us, we are just getting a little. Enough to make a memory but not cause trouble. We are taking long hot showers, eating our buffet breakfast in the cabin, deep cleaning, then going to church. This afternoon we enjoy the waterpark, pool, farm, games in the rain, ultimate foam, or just games in our cabins (all cabins have stocked game boxes). Tonight is another buffet, hopefully, the rain has passed by then!
I must mention last night’s EP, Counselor Hunt/Shaving Cream Fight. It was a surprise to the girls (who thought we were going to have a “Nature Scavenger Hunt” where they got points for identifying trees and plants). About 30 minutes of looking for their counselors (who were hiding all over camp), gathering gold (which was scattered randomly all over camp and worth 1 point each), and finding/returning watermelons to home base (the melons were covered in vaseline to make it interesting… 1 melon worth 20 points). We gathered to count the points, return the counselors, and have a celebration on the soccer field (shaving cream fight while the irrigation system was running). Good times!
We have a big week ahead of us, a week that is going to fly by. The girls sense the finish line and their excitement is building. It is going to be a great week, a great session, a great year. Thank you for making it possible.
