Yesterday’s rain moved out during Rest Hour. The steady light rain (more of a heavy drizzle) fell all morning and during our sermon but the clouds were gone by the time afternoon activities began. This made for a perfect afternoon, picnic, and EP setting… the view from our front campus is always dramatic at such times. When the rain ends and the sun comes out, a mist forms in the valleys of the surrounding mountains, a line of dark clouds often appears to be held back by our protecting mountains (Tuxedo is located on the edge of the NC escarpment and those clouds reflect the sunset in a spectacular way).
Most cabins enjoyed their picnic on the lawn or by the lake so they could take in the views and soak up the sun. The 6 girls who won the joke contest (girls wrote down their best jokes and put them in a box… I read all 176 joke suggestions and picked the best ones) ate pizza with me and Margaret on our porch last night. So much fun! We just barely made it back to EP in time for the first Counselor Talent act.
Counselor talent is really counselor skit night. The girls LOVE IT! Campers go crazy for their counselors and think that anything they say or do is the best thing they have ever heard or seen. This is why some of your daughters will want to go to Furman, Wake Forest, App State, UGA, Wofford, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Auburn, UNC, UVA, William & Mary, and so on. The counselors are awesome, worthy of the adulation and fitting role models. They also ham it up if given half a chance.
We ended EP a bit early (8:30) and everyone enjoyed free time till the 9:00 Call to Quarters. This is what my father always called “The Golden Hour”; that wonderful time of day when the sun bathes everything in a golden hue. This is a time to savor, a time to share with friends, a time to reflect on the beauty of God’s creation. The girls savored it in every way imaginable (see-saws, swings, jimball, Adirondak chair time, dangling feet into the water from the docks, cartwheels, etc.). These moments are the ones that I hope they remember for decades for they are worthy.
The sun is out today and apparently for the rest of camp. Temperatures are rising into the 80’s and the humidity will be noticed. We will likely have afternoon thundershowers and glorious golden hours from now on. This is going to be a great week!
Thanks for checking in. You are the wind in our sails and we are grateful.
