Get to Know Her: Julie

This spring we’ve been introducing you to a few of the familiar faces around the bubble, and hasn’t it been fun? We’ve talked to Peggy, David, Sara, and Solveig, and today we’re bringing you one more interview before the summer.

Today we’re inviting you to spend a few moments with everyone’s favorite Yoga teacher: Julie Sellers! Her dance moves are legendary and she’s always up for a walk or a game on the Dining Hall porch. Come along as she tells us how she first learned of Greystone, what her life looks like during the year, and the host of classes she’s taught during her time at Greystone (she’s a jack of all trades!).

How did you first learn about Greystone and how many years have you been here?

I first heard about Greystone from my cousin, Ina Hopkins, who sent her daughter to Greystone. She told me I had to get started sending Meredith and to begin with Junior Camp. From there Meredith went to June Camp for two summers and then aged out. She thought she might not be ready for Main Camp so I applied to work. I have an undergraduate degree in home economics and Greystone needed a cooking instructor! I taught cooking for ten years and for the last five years I have taugh wherever camp needs me.

What does your role at camp look like now? What has kept you coming back for so many years?

I have enjoyed teaching Yoga, Bible, Card Games, Fitness, and even Waterpark! Wherever I am needed I am happy to go. I keep coming back to camp because of the relationships I have made with many other adult leaders and with the girls and counselors. As a retired teacher, I enjoy being with young people and helping them grow in their relationships with God and with each other.

What do you enjoy about teaching yoga?

I love yoga and am an advocate for everyone to try it. During the COVID lockdown I taught yoga in my driveway for my friends.

Where do you live during the year and what does your life look like when you’re not at camp?

When I retired seven years ago, I moved to St. Simons Island. I stay very active biking, taking yoga classes, walking on the beach, playing tennis and pickelball, and working in my yard. I am a deacon at my church, sing in ensembles and choir and play in the handbell choir. I am in two book clubs and play bridge a couple of times a week. I love spending time with family and have two precious grandsons and a granddaughter due in August.

Do you have a favorite or special camp memory that sticks out?

The summer that Meredith was a counselor and my son Jacob was on men’s staff was such a wonderful summer.

Why is Greystone special to you?

Greystone is special because of the people and God’s presence here. Camp is special to my whole family. I prayed that my sons would marry Greystone girls and they both did! In fact, Jacob met his wife, Rebecca Marshburn, at camp! Meredith is now returning to work at camp too. This summer we will work together at August camp. Everyone in our family looks forward to family camp.

Do you have a hidden talent?

I have been making sour dough bread for 31 years. I use to bring my starter to camp but now one of my friends keeps it alive!

Favorite camp food? Evening Program?

I love the scones and the fruit bar! I look forward to the Corn Roast every year because I love to dance.

Anything else you want to add or say to our campers?

Camp has been a wonderful blessing in my life!
