Hello Greystone Junior Campers, and welcome to the Opening Day of Junior Camp!
Though nothing is going to compare to being together in Tuxedo, we’ve created a special website just for you that we hope will give you a small taste of camp at home. We’re calling it The Camp Connection! Check your emails today for all the information you need and keep an eye all week long as we post fun activities, songs, and videos that we hope will make you smile.
Most of our Junior Campers are first time campers (we love it!). You may have not experienced a usual opening day at Greystone, but your enthusiasm for your first camp experience is something that makes all of us at Greystone so happy! We are missing your smiling faces today!!
A typical Opening Day is full of excitement and anticipation of the week to come. Our campers arrive in a short 2 hour period, unloading cars, moving trunks and walking to tentalows or bungalows where counselors are waiting for you. Everyone makes sure to go by the Dining Hall to meet the directors and to get a FAMOUS Greystone scone. Here is the recipe if you want to try making these yummy treats with your parents today!
After all of the parents leave camp, we have an opening assembly, read our Pavilion Scripture verses, introduce you to our head staff and you head out into camp with your counselor and cabin mates to have your first cabin picture, as well as health and swim checks.
After a very full and tiring morning, lunch is a welcome treat, and afterwards, a first rest hour in your cabin is THE BEST!! Activities start in the afternoon. I know that you are so sad to miss the classes you signed up for this year and our staff is really missing YOU in those classes that they had prepared for you!
Greystone is full of traditions - things that we do every year at every session. I have already mentioned a couple of traditions - scones on Opening Day morning and the reading of the verses in the Pavilion when we first gather. We also have a tradition at dinner: Opening Day Spaghetti!
At Junior Camp we always make it with Bow Tie pasta to make it easy to eat. I am going to make it tonight in celebration of our Opening Day, so maybe you all will join me at home? Any recipe will do, so use your family favorite. You will be MISSED as I sit down to eat my dinner!
Our theme verse for the summer of 2020 was chosen before COVID-19 disrupted our lives. It has turned out to be the perfect verse for this summer and has brought me much comfort as we have worked through the changes in our daily life.
At Junior Camp we all practice our theme verses together so that by the time we leave camp, we have learned the Bible verse by Heart. This year the Verse is Philippians 4: 6-7.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
I hope that you will join me this week as we put this special scripture in our minds and hearts!
Greystone misses you in person today, but we’re excited about having a fun week with you this week! I hope you have a GREAT DAY!
