Your trunk is unpacked, your Chaco tan is already starting to fade, and you’ve traded bugles for books. You’re going back to school and getting back into the routine of classes, sports, and friends, but do you ever wonder what happens to that camp in ‘ole Tuxedo once you’re gone?
The number one thing that changes when our campers leave? Camp gets so quiet! We go from 500 giggling girls dancing and rolling down the hill to just the Miller family. No matter how loud Murray barks, you can still hear a pin drop!
We never quite get used to the silence, but there’s no time to waste in tidying things up for the Fall. Every cabin is deep cleaned and activity areas are shut down - yes, the blob is even deflated! We take many of our horses to their winter pastures to get a well deserved break, and all of the canoes are packed away for the year.
You’ll still find Jimboy going on his afternoon runs and a few of us plugging away in the office, but overall camp feels so different - you would hardly recognize it! Before too long the leaves will start to change and we’ll board up the Dining Hall and other buildings to get them ready for the winter.
The good thing is, it’s not too long before camp has people in it again. Enter, the off-season! The time when college students take over camp and you just might find boys staying in your bunk - so weird! We welcome Wofford College for their freshman Orientation and RUF for multiple Fall Conferences. We even get to hug some of our counselors again when they come to work the weekend!
We save the best for last, and the off-season closes with our Alumnae Reunion. We soak up every bit of that few days because after the Reunion, we close up until the next summer!
The quiet is always nice for a few days, but camp is just a pretty place without the people - it just isn’t the same without our campers here! So we’ll just be over here planning for the best summer ever and counting down the days until you all are back with us!
