Resting Up

Today we got an extra hour of sleep due to a little thing we call “Sleep Late Friday”. We do this every week at Main Camp and everyone loves it! You wouldn’t think a little thing like an extra hour in bed is a big deal, but we can tell you otherwise!

We will add an extra hour to the “sleep allowance” tomorrow morning as well (due to the big “Overnight Extravagnaza” EP tonight), and follow that with a relaxing Sunday schedule. This little adjustment will have a good effect, for we are all feeling a little tired. The days are long and we are very active, it makes a body feel great but also weary. I think camp is particularly sweet because of a forgotten fact: life is sweeter when life is simpler.

Last night’s Birthday Ball and Talent show were tons of fun. The birthday girls were individually escorted by our “ushers” (men staff, hair slicked down, wearing tuxedo tops and yellow cumberbunds) to their seats. The men then serenaded the girls with an acapello rendition of “Happy Birthday” that was actually quite good! The grilled chicken taco’s and mango salsa was a hit and the home made ice cream sandwiches were amazing (the cooking class made the cookies and assembled them into sandwiches during class the past two days). The talent show was fantastic and we once again went to bed with a sense of satisfaction in our souls.

There is a beauty at camp that is hard to describe… a beauty seen in the people (campers AND counselors) that flourish in this setting. A beauty that is found in the countless little moments that fill our days… bright eyes stealing a mischievous glance across the pit after a funny moment in the pavilion, raucous dancing on a cabin porch during clean up, quiet reading by the lake before EP. We delight in such moments and embrace our remaining days with high hopes for the time we have left.

There is only one week left at camp. The campers feel like there is a long time before they return home, but we “old timers” know that the remaining days will pass in the blink of an eye. These end of camp programs will build excitement in a progressive way over the next few days. By Tuesday, the reality will be fully felt and we will frantically grasp the remaining moments.

  • Breakfast: Hot Crossents, artisan sausage (locally sourced)
  • Lunch Parmesian Chicken (served with romaine lettuce, homemade croutons, and a specialty dressing).
  • Dinner Spagetti Casserole and bread pudding (bread pudding is the best dessert we do at camp… sublime; probably due to the home made bread).
  • Temperatures in the high 80’s today (unless a cooling rain shower comes at rest hour). This is the hottest it has been all session.
  • The Overnight Extravaganza is going to be wildly popular… 20 campfires burning around camp, girls sleeping in a wide variety of places (from a luxury sleep over at my home theater to a genuine glamping setup in massive tent “quads”).
  • We will be serving popsicles for afternoon snacks (nice in the hot weather).

Thank you again for sharing your girls. They are spectacular!
