A low pressure front is brushing past North Carolina, bringing cloudy skies and the promise of rain throughout the day and into the night… and we couldn’t be more pleased!
Rain is a part of life. It keeps the lawns green, the rivers full, and forms beautiful clouds that cling dramatically to the sides of the mountains. Rain is fun to play in and it drops the temperatures wonderfully. And perhaps best of all, rain on a tin roof is one of the most glorious sounds known to man.
Our rain today will not effect the girls very much (almost all classes meet as normal, the rest have special rain plans that are a lot of fun). The biggest impact will be the high spirits that arise from unexpected joy shared as we splash in mud puddles and learn new games like “ultimate foam”. The program is set, the counselors are prepared, and the girls are looking forward to having a Great Day no matter the weather.
This was the lesson of Breakfast Club today: that camp is a place where we exercise our “attitude” muscles, developing responses that will enhance our lives when we return home. Much of the time our circumstances will be less than perfect, the question we all have to face is what our response to that deficiency will be. Most people don’t look for the positive… and that is a shame, for the positive side is always there if you look. By practicing this skill every day, we build very strong positive character muscles. We hope you notice this trait in your daughter when she returns home… such a delightful thing to see!
We also encouraged the girls to be curious about the world that surrounds them (with mention of the amazing capacities of fireflies and the amazing amount of gold located in the earth’s molten core). A life of curiosity is an interesting life; a curious person is a delight to know; and God encourages us to interact with creation with the prospect of seeing His Glory in every detail. What a great lesson to learn at such a time of life!
Tonight will be our big Birthday Ball and Camper Talent Show… this is a really fun night, particularly if it is raining! We invite all the girls who celebrate their birthday while at camp to be honored in a special way. They get dressed up and are given seats at the head table with Dr. Margaret and Jimboy. We give each girl a little present (a really cool necklace that spells Greystone in Morse Code), a favor (a Greystone cup that changes color with temperature), and a placecard. The entire camp eats a nice dinner (roast pork, roasted veggies, raviolli, tomato pie) and birthday cake. Afterwards we adjourn to the Pavilion to enjoy a really great Talent Show. The singing, dancing, comedy acts, juggling, and acting will be a delight to see… a celebration of the wonderful abilities that all the campers bring to our community.
Breakfast today was bagles, cream cheese, sausage, and jelly. Lunch is a camp favorite (cheesy chicken)… YUM!
Thanks for checking in, we are enjoying our time with your girls very much. They are precious beyond words!
