Aren’t weekends great!
There is a lightness of spirit that makes even routine tasks a delight. It is that way at camp too… for weekends are always given “highlight” events and provide a change of pace for everyone to enjoy.
This is our last Saturday at camp and we began it with one of the campers favorite Breakfas Club jokes (“I can see Clearly now Loraine is gone”) and a really wonderful morning assembly talk. We are now in our classes on the most beautiful day imaginable (temperatures will top off at 80, only 20% chance of rain). The counselors are accutely aware of the fact that their time is drawing to an end and are making the most of every minute. Lots of laughter and taking note of the details which we have grown accustomed to taking for granted. Their love of camp is infectous and is reflected in the campers (who are literally giddy about the prospect of tonight’s carnival).
It is a wonderful place that has been described by a former camper and counselor as a place where “Kindness is a currency”. A place where the veil between heaven and earth is thin. A community bonded together in love is appreciated by all, but the counselors best “get it” at August Camp. They understand the unique experience of camp better than anyone. They have experienced the joy of a life of radical service that has provided deep reservoirs of strength and optimism. They know that they will soon be back in the “real world”… that fact is both exciting and sad… a complex stew of emotions that make for poignant days.
August Camp is not a session marked by tears (that is Main Camp… a session where we tear up with deep emotion as we experience the wonderful joys of those last days together). August Camp is marked by laughter. What a great way to end the summer.
Thank you for choosing to make camp a part of your family’s summer plans. We deeply appreciate your support and are committed providing much more than a really great sleepover. We want them to gain confidence, resiliance, and joy from their two weeks at Greystone. We hope that when they talk about camp, it will be with bright eyes and big smiles. We hope that they make memories that are golden, never tarnishing as the years go by… memories that point to the lessons learned in this place of love. The Menu Today:
