Council Fire took place as normal last night. This was a blessing because of the huge rain storm that hit camp during 7th period. The skies opened up with a heavy rain (but no lightning) that made us think that the evening program would have to move indoors. Fortunately, the skies cleared and no storm cells formed in the aftermath.
The neat thing about the rain was how many classes proceeded in the deluge. There is a delight to swimming in a rain storm that is hard to describe. The rain is cold but the lake or pool is warm by comparison. There is a wonderful sound that is only heard when your ears are at waterlevel; this sound is enhanced by the smell (yes, rain drops impacting lake water somehow smell wonderful). There is a wonderful emotion that naturally arises when vigorously exercising in the rain. Dancing, running, or playing ultimate foam ball is MUCH more fun when the rain keeps you from overheating. Bottom line… we had a blast!
Today we awoke to blue skies (again) and the promise of a warm and humid summer day. The forecast is the same as yesterday, so afternoon fun in the rain is a distinct possibility! It looks like it is going to be a GREAT day to enjoy “National Fried Chicken Day”!!! Yes, it is National Fried Chicken Day and we are celebrating accordingly. Breakfast was chicken and waffles, Lunch will be Fried Chicken Dinner, and Dinner will be Chicken Fried Steak. Every day is better with a theme!
This evening we will break into groups to have special EP’s that were prepared by the Group Leaders. The big one is the dinner that Margaret and I host at our house for the rising 10th graders. This is one of the biggest groups in camp and these girls have been attending for a long time. For a lot of them, this will be their last summer at Greystone (between summer school, work, college visits, and athletic obligations many simply do not have the time). So Margaret and I do a blow out party for them. The girls get dressed up and come to our house for a nice catered dinner. It is a lovely night and most appreciated by all… we can’t wait!
Other groups will enjoy pool parties, Putt Cove parties, Blob Dock parties, board games, and big group games. It will be a fun night.
One of the things we are already looking forward to is the Five Year Celebration on Saturday. This is an occasion to honor all of the campers who have attended camp for Five years or longer (at least three of those at Main Camp). The Senior Senior campers give short “favorite memory” speeches that are the main focus of the evening. While we have provided Livestream broadcasting of this event in years past but have decided not to Livestream Five Year this summer. The reason for this change is due to technical challenges and the “feel” that is changed by broadcasting an event. Technically, it is almost impossible for us to provide a good experience for the viewer (it is very hard to see the girls unless we put in very bright lights that distract from the moment for the campers). We are laser focused on the camper experience and only want to provide excellent experiences for all. We hope you understand!
Thanks for checking in. Tomorrow we will once again sleep late as we enter our second weekend of the session. We are having a Great Day and will have them for weeks to come! Thank You for making it possible!!!
