The update yesterday was on the “Great Day Attitude” that we encourage at camp. Always look on the bright side of life, so to speak… A simple recipe but one that works beautifully! We expected to be challenged by the rain yesterday afternoon, but as it turns out we had nothing but perfectly lovely weather all day long (blue sky with lots of fluffy clouds, leading to a perfect sunset). Once the sun went down it rained as expected: much like Camelot (“where it never rains till after sun down”… I’m a big fan of Broadway shows old and new). So today at Breakfast Club I mentioned the great weather we had yesterday (a huge gift since it rained over 3 inches just ten miles from here) and how I give credit to God for that great weather.
At camp we talk about God a lot (we enjoy a morning devotion every day, Sunday Sermons, and nightly devotions in the cabins before tuck in time at night. That is a big chunk of the camp experience… add to that the fact that we pray (before meals, after morning assembly and evening program)… it is obvious that we put a big emphasis on God! Some of you might wonder if we are trying to be a “Church Camp”.
Actually, we are not! Camp is all about creating a “perfect world” for the campers. We have control of most details of the daily experience of life and so we get to deliberately add things to our day that make our community better. Dr. Sevier thought that glorifying and enjoying God was the “Chief end of man” and we still deeply believe this fact. The proof of the theory is found in the beautiful spirit that fills camp every summer. A Spirit of Love that is profoundly good. This spirit makes Greystone a Great camp! We want to run the best camp possible and know that God is a central part of reaching that goal.
So today I spoke to the girls about Spiritual Growth, connecting the great weather we had yesterday with God’s watching over us and ordering our days to be exactly right. We know that it will rain sometimes (an 80% chance of rain for pretty much every day this week) but we also know that no matter what happens that there is good to be found. As I write this update, the sun is shining and the clouds are evident all over the horizon. There are sounds of happy laughter and children playing floating through my open window; never has the message of Love been more clearly heard.
Spiritual Growth is closely tied to having a Great Day attitude. As my father used to say: “Once you have the answered this question in your life you will have Everything to look forward to and Nothing to dread!”. A good lesson to learn at any age!
The movie night was a big hit. Tonights Production Night will be a bigger hit. All the dance, drama, music, cheerleading, and juggling classes will perform routines learned at camp this summer. It is a celebration of accomplishment and a great show!
Breakfast: Scrambled Eggs, Grits, Bacon Lunch: Chicken Enchalada’s Dinner: Taco in a bag
Got to tell you about Taco in a Bag… an invention of my father about 40 years ago. Basically, take an individual size bag of Frito’s and let the girls fill it with taco fixings. It is easy and it is GOOD! The girls go crazy over it, a great solution for a group dinner if you have the need.
Thank you for reading.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
