Yesterday was the hottest day of the summer… and we loved every minute of it, for it was a party day if ever there was one!
The horse show was wonderful. My mother loved presenting the trophies for the Championship Class and was surprised by the announcement of the new Libby Hanna Miller Horsemanship Trophy to be awarded to each years Champion. This trophy has room for fifty years of Main Camp Champions… a connection to the campers of tomorrow, making this year particularly special. We thank Jeanne Ashmore (Riding Director from the 80’s) for giving us the trophy and thank Lisa (her daughter) for a great summer of riding.
Informal surveys indicate that the riding program has taken a huge step forward. More girls are participating and all are encouraged by the way they have been challenged in their classes. We could not be more pleased and celebrate this moment with the entire riding program!
A quick word about the Derby Day feast, served before we watched the Senior Play production of Legally Blond (the musical). We served an entire “school” of whole poached salmon, fifty pounds of prime rib, seventy five pounds of smoked turkey, hundreds of pounds of chicken fingers (the favorite of the meats!). We served fruit and cheese, three kinds of pasts, quesadillas made to order, and veggies. And we served chocolate covered strawberries, cupcakes in several flavors, and bread pudding (the favorite). It was REALLY NICE… the kitchen staff not only served a feast, they served it on nice linens with chafing dishes and flower arrangements. Why in earth do we do it?
Such moments are really expressions of love and pride in the skills we have honed over the past month. The kitchen crew functions with the kind of excellence found in very good restaurants… last night gave them a chance to prove it to a community that they love to serve. We celebrate the kitchen almost every day (announcing what the food will be and thanking them for particularly challenging meals). To have a chance to go all out one last time is something they enjoyed very much, kind of their “super bowl” moment!
Finally, the play was amazing. Watch it today on Livestream if you want. The very large cast was superbly chosen and the crew accomplished an almost perfect production in a very challenging play. Two hours and twenty minutes has never passed so quickly nor more delightfully. We laughed a lot and were constantly turning to our friends after a great line. As the concluding scene finished the entire pavilion jumped up and gave a three minute standing ovation. What a wonderful moment!
Tonight will be our Closing Vespers, tomorrow is Banquet, you will pick your girls up the day after tomorrow. Hard to believe.
If you plan on driving to Hendersonville tomorrow, check out Greystone Alum Starr Teel’s amazing BBQ restaurant Hubba-Hubba. It is located in scenic Flat Rock, close to the hotels you tend to stay in and he always loves to see the Greystone families! He was a counselor, ran our kitchen, and caters special occasion meals for the girls (he did the 9th grade dinner at our house).
Can’t believe it is almost over. We are praying for safe travels for you all… soaking up the final moments of our Best Summer Ever!
