We awoke today with a great deal of anticipation for what the day will hold. Another big day of classes followed by a picnic and one of the most anticipated EP’s of the summer. The weather feels GREAT: for a cold front has pushed the humid “soft” air out of the area and replaced it with a delightful crisp feel. A drop from 80% humidity to 70% humidity is actually a big deal if you do not live in air conditioned spaces, thus the entire camp feels their spirits lift with that simple change.
The timing could not be better. Friday marks the end of our first week; the point where we “celebrate” with a BIG Carnival! The girls get SO EXCITED about carnival day at camp. There is good reason for this enthusiasm, for we do throw a good party. We rent a ton of inflatable rides, roll out a bunch of carnival food, we get dunked and play on water slides, and we dance and dance and dance. The girls go a little crazy and that is fine. It is a celebration night and we have earned the fun!
It is hard to imagine that we only have one week left in the summer. Most of us have been here since Memorial Day and the camp routine is one that we now think of as normal. To know that it will soon end feels strange… the counselors are excited to get back to the real world but they also will miss “the bubble”.
We call camp life “the bubble” for it is completely protected from the outside world. We don’t have cell phones, we don’t check email, we don’t know the national news, our jobs are simple (teach a class, hang out with a cabin) and we feel the warmth of success when we do those jobs well. There is unconditional love that is showered upon us and that we shower on others as well. Life is simple and life is good. Work is difficult while at the same time being delightful. We have close friends all around and those friends provide a full experience of life lived well. It is a good place and we are enjoying it immensely with the girls.
Write those hand written letters today and through the weekend. The mail sent on Monday will certainly be delivered, but snail mail might well prove to miss the Thursday deadline if sent after that. The girls love getting mail, let them know that you are proud of them and can’t wait to hear all of the stories of camp. They will have a lot to share!
Thanks again for your support. We are grateful.
