Greystone was founded by a minister, so it is no surprise that we treat Sundays a little different than most camps. We hold on to the traditions of Sunday School (by cabin group, led by Program Staff) and formal worship service (complete with the Lord’s Prayer, offering, choir, and sermon). We do this in obedience to the commandment to “keep the Sabboth holy”… and we are blessed by the effort!
Sundays are a more relaxed day than the rest of the week. We don’t have to get up at 7:30 if we don’t want to (9:00 is the official wake up time). While some chose to take full advantage of the extra time and sleep in, others decided to “Fly with the eagles” and come down to the track at 8:00 to run Stumblers. This is a club that my father started 30 years ago and that we celebrate in massive numbers every Sunday of the summer. I would guess that 400 campers and counselors were on the track for our first stumblers of the year. Impressive!
We ran three miles in an absolutely perfect setting. The camp is shrouded in mist, the clouds are very low and it looks like it might rain again before the day is done… perfect weather for a run (or walk). Lots of great conversations and lots of great memories being made. We also hope that we are teaching the girls that getting out and having a semi strenuous workout can be a lot of fun. If a camper runs next Sunday as well, she will be rewarded with a great T-shirt (they really are nice this year, a “tri fabric” that is super soft).
After Stumblers, the breakfast buffet opens and the girls are welcome to get a bite to eat whenever they like (between 9 and 10). We then have an hour to get ready for Sunday School and Church (Sunday School is done with their cabin group, church all together in the Pavilion). Jonathan Davis will be preaching.
Jonathan and his wife Erin are living at camp as the resident minister. His job is to teach a short devotion at our Morning Assemblies each morning and preach a great message on Sunday. He is a wonderful speaker and the girls have really adopted his whole family into the Greystone bubble. I suggest you take a few minutes to listen to his sermons and devotions, posted on the website daily (on the News page, look to the right on the Morning Assembly tab …it is a great resource).
We are having fun, looking forward to a day of rest, anticipating a very exciting week to come. Life is good.
