Yesterday we launched our second War Canoe, thus completing a two year restoration project of epic scale. It was a wonderful day, one that celebrated the heritage of camp in a very special way.
Perry White, who used to be the Program Director at Greystone, took it on himself to restore these magnificent canoes to their 1940’s brilliance. He knew it would be difficult (both canoes were in very bad condition) but even he was surprised at how much work such hand built boats demanded. From finding the right wood species to forming each piece of lumber into a very specific curvy shape and finishing it all to perfection… this was truly a work of art and of love.
Perry’s wife Joan, daughter Emily, and Grand Daughter Annie joined Lell and some of the maintenance crew who helped Perry with the restoration. The 24 foot canoe (room enough for an entire cabin of girls) was perfectly balanced and glided through the lake with ease… it is such a pleasure to see these magnificent canoes ready for another summer of fun.
We thank Perry for his love of camp that prompted this difficult undertaking. We will always be grateful.
