Tuesday

What a beautiful day!

The sky is blue, there is a light breeze steadily blowing from the South, our tummies are full (cheese and ham bagels), and all is well with the world. Temperatures will once again reach the low 80’s as the sun shines brightly all morning, clouds will once agin gather around lunchtime as the afternoon showers gather for a possible cloud burst before afternoon classes. The clouds will clear before dinner, and the fireflies will once again rise from the grass as we watch the first stars appear after EP.

We simply could not have a better weather pattern for camp. It is perfect, we are thankful.

Today’s Breakfast Club theme was on goal setting… how important it is to make plans for your day, to make every day count toward a purpose. Camp is a great place to practice this skill, girls do it all the time. They make goals of passing levels in classes, then ask their counselors to help them meet that goal, and celebrate the accomplishment when the goal is reached. Good life lesson!

There are some amazing opportunities for activities at camp… we work hard to offer a wide range of many different types of activities. One of the areas that I am really proud of is our Fine Arts programs. Our Jewelry making class is a great example of the excellence. Marilyn Bailey (who earned her Master of Arts in metalsmithing in 1973 and has been a professional jewelry artist ever since) runs the department, personally teaching every camper in the art of hammering sheets of silver to form remarkably beautiful pieces of jewelry. The girls learn skills that are unique (who teaches this art anymore?) and take home rings, bracelets, and necklaces that are heirlooms. It is a joy to visit the studio and see the girls intensely working on their projects.

A dear friend of camp is being buried today, Gladson Capps (who worked on the maintenance department off and on since the 1960’s) went to be with the Lord on Saturday after a long life in Tuxedo. Friends such as this define what a 95 year tradition is all about. He will be missed.

Have a Great Day
