Only at Camp

Last night’s EP was grand and glorious… a celebration of team building, reckless abandon, dance, and dirt. In short, it was a perfect camp event!

It began at the flag pole. The entire camp was gathered by cabin groups and as the Seniors ran onto the lawn the cabin groups immediately yelled and jumped with joy as they called “their Senior” to join the cabin. It was a precious moment… one of those really wonderful “chill bump” moments. The goal was to “protect” your Senior and the cabins took that goal to heart… quite literally sacrificing themselves to keep their new friend clean in the midst of some very messy obstacles.

We spent about 40 minutes rotating through the various obstacles around the camp, then gathered on the soccer field for the “Color Dance”. We will soon post the video of the moment when the color powder was thrown up in the air… spectacular and NOT the kind of thing we do at home.

The girls rinsed off then went back to their cabin to take a good shower. We sent all the messy clothes to the cleaners this morning and are shocked that the camp is not “messed up” after all the fun (it actually looks good… surprisingly).

We enjoyed “Sleep Late Friday” this morning. Reveille did not blow until 8:30 and that extra hour of sleep is GLORIOUS!!! We serve “breakfast in bed” to the cabins (scones, greek yogurt, cereal, milk) then are on time for morning assembly and classes. We will do this every week, a much beloved “new tradition” of Main Camp.

The clouds have returned… temperatures of 80 degrees, higher humidity, no breeze, and the promise of afternoon showers again. All in all a great day!

Tonight we will enjoy a quiet, significant, memorable EP: Opening Vespers. I will tell the story of love and light (The Keeper of the Flame), we will say our verses, light our candles… and take a moment to consider the fleeting nature of beauty. Our time at camp will quickly pass and is very fragile in many ways. We take this time to step back and appreciate this fact and commit to enjoying it fully. There is much Spiritual truth in the talk and in the symbol of light that is celebrated. This simple message gets through to all ages and is appreciated for a lifetime. For many campers, this marks the “true beginning” of their camp experience.

Thanks for reading. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

PS We have been informed that when folders have more than 1200 photos, they are difficult for you to navigate. Lesson learned! We will make an effort to break them up if they are huge (I am the worst culprit… sorry!).
