Whenever anything significant happens at camp, we always let you know. Yesterday, there was an accident at a neighboring camp that meets this standard.
A counselor at Camp Mondamin (located across the lake from us, run by the Bell family for three generations) died when the mast of a sailboat he was pulling out of the lake hit a power line. The accident occurred at 11:00 AM. The 30 year old long time counselor was immediately taken to the hospital. Our sailing and kayaking classes were in full swing when the accident occurred. They heard a “bang” and saw sparks but did not know what had happened. Our counselors acted quickly, calling the boats in and gathering the girls in our Sail Lodge while the EMS first responders were on the site. The counselor was taken to Pardee Hospital, but they were unable to resusitate him.
I made this sad announcement to the camp this morning at morning assembly. We worship a Soverign God who works all things for His Perfect Plan. Our comfort is found by resting in His love, so we prayed that God would comfort the boys at Mondamin and the family of this fine young man. The girls responded very appropriately to the news.
The campers are now out having fun in their classes with the keen anticipation of the big EP tonight. Camper Talent Show is a big deal at camp, we LOVE seeing the many acts (about 20 acts are chosen from the three “Mini Talent Shows” that we held earlier in the week during free time). We begin the evening with our Birthday Ball where every girl who has a birthday at camp sits at a big banquet table with Margaret and me. They are all dressed up and are given little favors to remember the occasion. The Head Staff wait on them hand and foot (filling water glasses, bringing food, clearing dirty plates) and we present a HUGE birthday cake to the delight of the entire camp. Our cake decorating classes are making every table a specially decorated cake to enjoy… It will be a great night.
The weather continues to be delightful, chance of rain in the afternoon but otherwise perfect. Tomorrw we will see the clouds move away and things will dry out. Life is good.
Thank you for your continued support and interest. It is such a pleasure to have your girls with us. They are SO SWEET!!! I can’t imagine a more thankful group, sincerely appreciating everything that is given to them and making us feel loved. You should be proud.
