Throwback Thursday

#TBT everybody! The girls get pretty fired up about Breakfast Club on Throwback Thursday, they all wonder what the joke will be and give me suggestions all week long. Today I brought back “It’s not Chardonnay”— the one about a teacher who tastes a drip coming from a wrapped present that she thinks is wine only to find out that it isn’t wine after all… but a puppy! Every one laughs throughout the telling of the joke but not at the punchline… classic.

Last nights Corn Roast was a hit in the gym… and good thing we set up inside. The rain started falling as we sat down to eat and continued until we went to bed at 10:00. Cat Williams was in rare form, she brought her new band and they rocked the house BIG TIME. The girls danced and sang along for the 90 minute concert, the rain keeping everyone in the gym instead of spreading out (like we usually do at Corn Roast). We served Root Beer while they danced and the girls LOVED IT.

One comment made to Laura from a new band member was precious… “I can tell this is a Christian camp, noticed it as soon as we walked in the Dining Room. Everyone is just so nice here… you can tell something is different.” Nine out of Ten musicians agree! Greystone is a great venue to play!

Our Skip Year Reunion went very well… 29 girls from all over the nation converged at my house to enjoy a camp visit. They leave after lunch today but their impact on the camp has been profoundly good. These girls love camp and that love is a tonic to us all. We kept them at our house until 5:10 free time (they moved in and spent the afternoon hanging out, then we let them hit camp at free period). The girls gathered at the front gate and ran into camp as soon as the bell rang, screaming as they came! The entire camp heard the arrival and smiled! It was precious.

This rain is presenting persistant problems to people of position… namely me. The mulch is beyond hope… if we had a team of 100 men we could maybe get it moved out and replaced in a week (but the new mulch would be just as messy in no time). Our game fields have a skim layer of water almost everywhere, grass pulling out by the roots and turning to mud with the slightest disturbance. Gutters are overflowing and ditches have a perpetual stream of water from the runoff. Crazy!

I decided to do an inspection walk through the bungalows and cabins to see for myself how the living spaces are holding up. It was fantastic! Lell has the supply hut organized with lots of extra cleaning stuff, the laundry is running at full capacity and keeping up with the work according to schedule. There is no need to bring in the commercial laundry for another towel run (the cabin rails are not over full with towels and the laundry loads are normal). I was so encouraged and thankful!

My photos include the Health Hut (this has been the most healthy session in memory, very few injuries and illnesses) and the Kitchen. My son works in the Kitchen in the Prep Crew. He says his job is to “basically chop up stuff” all day long. He enjoys the work, as do the entire team… they play music and talk as they work. Most are surprised to enjoy washing dishes in that first year and choose to return (that is how one is promoted to prep, baking, or front line). Most begin as 14 year olds, so by the time they are 16 their skills are strong! I worked in the kitchen for many years: those life skills have been very valuable and most appreciated.

Tonight is Group Night… campers going all over the place (Tentalows 1-4 scavenger hunt, T 5-L8 are having a party at Putt Cove Marina, U8-T12 are going skating in town, Bungalows 1-6 going to a baseball game in Asheville, Cabin 1-8 are coming to my house for a catered dinner with Dr. Margaret, and C9-12 are having a private concert with Drew and Ellie. Kind of a HUGE night for the girls.

Thank you for keeping up with all this maddness. Camp is going well… things are very busy and about to get even busier!

Get Excited!
