WOW

Words will not convey how perfectly lovely this day is. The sky is a deep blue (as opposed to our normal lighter, “carolina blue”) proving that the humidity is very low. There is a nice breeze coming off the lake. It is a heart achingly beautiful day.

If I were visiting in the area, I would check the real estate listings wistfully… who wouldn’t want to live here?

We let the camp sleep in this morning (we call it “Sleep Late Friday” and it is a ton of fun). At 8:30 Reveille blows and the girls pick up a picnic breakfast to eat in their cabins. Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Cinnamon Crunch cereal, milk, and juice… a light breakfast but really yummy. We drove into the local doughnut shop first thing in the morning. The doughnuts were fresh and light as air… every one gets at least two, but I think we could eat ten if given the chance. Krispy Kreme is a Southern tradition; but I guess you all know that.

Tonight’s EP is the Talent Show! This is a very good EP, a variety show comprised of the best of the best acts from the 4 “mini-shows” we held during free time this week. Twenty Four acts with about 70 girls… the anticipation is building and the evening will not disappoint.

It all starts with the Birthday Ball . Gervais will work all afternoon preparing the feast (Pork Loin Roast, Tomato Pie, Pasta, garlic roasted potatoes, fresh squash and birthday cake. The big cake for the guests of honor (all the girls who have birthdays while camp is in session) get dressed up and sit with my mother at a big banquet table. We (the head staff) serve them endless food and overflowing drinks and finish off with the presentation of the HUGE BIRTHDAY CAKE. Our head baker this year is an actual professional, training to be a pastry chef, Mallory Westphal, is a sophomore at Northern Arizona University and has stepped our baking up a notch. She can’t wait to go crazy with the cake… it delights the entire camp when we wheel it out ablaze with candles!

Lunch will be a simpler affair today: Crispy Chicken Salad with honey mustard dressing. The kitchen has their hands full with the feast preparations.

Start thinking about writing your “end of camp” letters. A letter you send on Saturday might not go out until Monday (depending on your local post office hours). A letter that goes out on Monday will not get here till Wednesday or Thursday… and that is the end of camp. Consider writing a nice long hand written letter to go along with the emails that you have been sending (we print about 500 a day). Hand written letters are treasured by the girls. Emails often are discarded very quickly, the trash cans are full of them after rest-hour… but letters are cherished. Consider your words and use them for effect. Your girls are prepared to listen to you. Your encouragement is like cold water on a hot day. Your advice is like a guiding star. Don’t let this opportunity pass… it is golden.

I am going to love taking pictures today. Got to head over to Putt Cove again (the wind will surely make for exciting action shots in Sailing).

JOKE… NO JOKE TODAY. It is Sleep Late Friday so we don’t do Breakfast Club. But since you love them so, I will share a couple simple favorites of mine:
Why are there no casinos in Africa?
TOO MANY CHEETAHS!

What do you call a Bear with no teeth?
A GUMMY BEAR!
