Scattered Showers

Last night, shortly after taps blew, a nice rain shower hit camp. That feeling of being snuggled under your covers as the rain falls on the tin roof of your cabin is priceless. I absolutely LOVE the rain, especially if I am able to enjoy it under my covers in a primative cabin. These are the memories of camp that are remembered for a lifetime.

Today will see scattered showers all over the WNC mountains. The sky is overcast, making vigerous activity levels very comfortable for these final days of classes (where the girls work hard to pass levels by Council Fire tomorrow night). As I write this, a cell just hit us and it looks really fun! No thunder, so everyone is still playing and I am going to go out to catch a few shots on the tennis courts. These cells blow through quickly, typically lasting 15 to 30 minutes… thus making them more fun. Greystone girls quickly learn that no matter what the weather, it is always a GREAT DAY!

The campers are REALLY comfortable with each other now (calling out names from across the pagent court, running to catch up with a familiar face while walking to class, and encouraging friends with loud cheers as they perform a dance or cheer on the stage). The girls anticipate Friday with a sense of exhuberant joy… quite literally running, rolling, and jumping as they transition through the now familiar routines of bells and bugles. Now is when the counselors are extra vigilant to help the girls slow down and hopefully avoid accidents, for these girls are really excited! It is infectious!

This feeling is easily felt, but was most noted by me at the EP last night. Production Night was a chance for about 30% of the camp to perform on stage. They sang, juggled, jumped rope, cheered, and danced for a solid one hour variety show. It was really good… not only for the quality of the acts (some of your girls are shockingly talented) but for the interaction of the girls with each other. On stage, off stage, in the pit… everywhere I looked I saw good things. Camp is clearly fun and it shows.

Tonight we will enjoy the Play (“Annie”) after eating one of our all time camper favorite meals: Taco ia a Bag. Take a bag of Frito’s and go down the taco-stuffings line, filling the bag to overflowing with ground beef, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and salsa. It is junk food… but REALLY GOOD. You can serve this meal for a group of 5 or a group of 500, it is always a home run and very easy to do. Each one of you should do it at least once a year… invite the neighborhood, you will become a legend.

Thank you for sharing your girls. It is such an honor to have them at Greystone. They are the best!

PS THE JOKE: Ike, Pike and Mustard are riding in jeep through the desert. Suddenly, the jeep breaks down, and the three brothers get out of the jeep to decide what to do. Ike says, “Let’s each take a part of the jeep so that we can survive a little longer through the desert. I’ll take the roof so that I can cover myself from the sun.” Pike says, “I’ll take the chair so that I can sit down when I’m tired.” Mustard says, “I’ll take the door so that I can roll the window down when I’m hot.”
