Tale of a Haunted Cabin

I got the strangest call late one night last summer. It was from Kelly Carew (our Program Director) who said that she had been called to check on Cabin 11 East to check out a “strange thing”. She went to the cabin (about 11:00 at night) and was surprised to see everyone awake and huddled together in fear! They said that the cabin was alive!!!

Kelly is used to some strange comments, but this one took the cake! She was especially surprised to see that it was Catherine Miller (my daughter, a very solid counselor) who made this assessment!!! Catherine knows camp well and has been a camper in this particular cabin… if something was strange she would know!

So Kelly checked it out and sure enough, the cabin seemed to be lightly moving! It was a very subtle feeling, but when quiet and trying to go to sleep… it could be felt. Kelly didn’t know what to say, so she called me.

We decided to check it out with maintenance the next day… but the maintenance guys were stumped. Why was it just now doing this new thing? Is this a genuine Haunted Castle???

To end the tale: it isn’t haunted. The actual problem was two fold:

  • The Foundation was not up to code (the cabin needed new concrete foundations for the posts).
  • The new ventilation fans were causing a vibration (we balanced the blades).

We are fixing everything this week. Fifty Two bags of concrete were used to make new foundations for the big 6X6 posts. These foundations are two feet deep and two feet wide, very solid! We then put new posts in, cross bracing them to make them very solid. The end result… the loss of our first “haunted cabin”.

Not a bad way to kick off the month of October!
