Tuesday

I am sure you are wondering what happened last night.

When last we visited I said that there was a good chance of rain during our big Outdoor Campfire Extravaganza. By “good chance” I mean 95%!!! We asked for prayers as there was not a lot of flexibility with the EP schedule at this stage of the camp calendar and your prayers were answered! It did not rain during the campfire time! There were HIGE storm clouds to the West and to the North of camp, but the Lord gave us blue skies during the little 1 hour window that was needed to roast our marshmallows and play games. Rather than sit on the wet grass, we showed the movie in the Pavilion (Not “Cars” but “Toy Story”… a good change, many girls had nver seen the original).

About the Pizza…. had to “punt” on that one too. Our BIG deck oven (a giant steam injection monster from Italy that we use for bread and pizza baking) died just before the morning bread was baked. A little part that allows gas to flow to the oven apparently wore out (I can relate). We called New York and had a part sent overnight so we can be back online today… but pizza was out! We made Philly Cheese Steaks instead and plan on doing Pizza tonight. Ah the joys of camp!

Today we introduced the girls to “Truck Drivers Special”. I can see from the comments that there are a lot of ex-campers reading the blog and so I know there are a lot of people who are smiling at this moment. There is something wonderful about this very simple meal… a great big buttermilk biscuit (Gervais gets up at 4:30 AM to make them) and a big bowl of sausage gravy. It is possible that the girls will never eat this meal apart from camp and maybe that is why they like it so much. It is very tasty… I can’t wait till next summer (I only eat it at camp too)!

It looks like a great day. Overcast, but not raining. High temperatures in the low 80’s, light breeze, chance of afternoon showers (again). We are in the Pavilion again tonight for the “Production Night”. Dance, music, Drama, Juggling, Jumprope, Sign Language, Guitar… it is will be a great show.

Thank you for sharing your girls with us. They are so sweet…. I will close with a couple examples of the kind of encouragement they give me every day. After the Benediction at Church on Sunday, I dismiss the girls by encouraging them to thank the Minister and let him know that you appreciated his sermon. I was surprised to see a small group come up to me as the rest of the camp stormed out of the Pavilion. Each one would give me a hug and each one said “Good Job” before running off to their cabin. Funny! Today I had a girl come up to me during breakfast. She introduced herself and said that she just wanted to thank me for “having August Camp”. She had come for years and said it just gets better and better every year. Sweet.

These girls are special. We appreciate them so much… it is an honor to enjoy these last weeks of the summer with them.

Sincerely

Jimboy
