Water Sports Day

The camp schedule is suspended today. Rather than regular classes, we are taking the morning off to enjoy another of the traditions that is most beloved at Greystone… Water Sports Day!

The warm sunny morning is perfect for our plans… we began our competition at 10:00 and will complete the fun at 1:00. The list of activities will give you a sense of the day: Sink my battleship, pool volleyball, water 4-square, Ultimate Water Foam Ball, H2O Overalls, Field Noodle Hockey, Watermelon Relay, Buckets of fun, Big Bad Boat Race, and swimming Relays. Needless to say, it is not so much about winning as about fun… a nice active morning that will wear us all out.

The day will end with one of the truly unique EP’s of the summer: The Watershow. We will gather at the pool to see an old fashioned water ballet put on by the Syncro classes. You might be surprised to learn that Synchro is a HUGELY popular class at Greystone. About 130 girls take the class, some are first year beginners and some have perfected their skills over many summers at Main Camp… each class performs— some girls will perform multiple times. It really is spectacular.

The pool complex was built with this show in mind, the bleachers are big enough to seat everyone… almost (guests overflow to the rear). The view from the bleachers is perfect, allowing each camper a good view of the show. We have a fantastic sound system (designed by the same company that does the stadium sound systems for Clemson)… all we need is some good weather!

Fortunately, the weatherman is calling for a manageable 40% chance of showers. If all goes well, we will be treated to the perfect combination of sunset and grand finale extravaganza with all 130 campers doing a final GIANT syncro act.

The campers are accomplishing so much. Never was this fact more clear than last night’s Production Night. Half of the camp performed in the 29 acts of song, drama, dance, sword play, jump rope, and juggling— all in 29 acts! It was a long and delightful show… a wonderful night.

We are going from wonderful moment to wonderful moment in these final days of camp. The girls are hanging on to the final days with big smiles and big eyes… they don’t want to miss a thing. Counselors are spending their time off writing “Plane Letters” to their campers. Campers are walking hand in hand and doing a lot of hugging. There is no sense of the limited days left, but it is about to hit.

Tomorrow will be a transition day. Our last Sunday, Last Stumblers, and Last Council Fire. That is when it will hit, in the quiet of a long rest hour— camp is almost over. The bubble is about to break into a thousand pieces and go different directions. That is when the poignant phase of camp begins.

Until then, we celebrate.
