Monday

We began the day with sunny skies and a nice cool breeze. It promises to be a wonderful day both for the things we are planning and the things that will come as a surprise.

The girls are anticipating the Jimboy Olympics this evening… we have had a big roll out of the event, complete with posters, stickers, and trading cards. Today the girls will get their commemorative shirts and cheer their teams on to victory at the main event after dinner. As long as it doesn’t thunderstorm, all will be well.

Breakfast was a nice hearty scrambled eggs and sausage. The fruit bar is spectacular, especially now. The blueberries are perfect, the honeydew, pineapple, and strawberries… yum. Put some fruit on top of the oatmeal, really nice breakfast. We changed tables today, as we do every Monday. A new group of friends to meet makes for a great way to start the week.

Breakfast Club was on modesty. Why did Greystone go to a one piece bathing suit rule? We didn’t always have this rule but found it to be a good idea as the “style” of suit became more and more skimpy. Bathing suits were sometimes downright scandalous… shocking to camper and counselor alike. We were becoming “bathing suit police”, having to send campers back to change. It was practically disruptive, but also philosophically disruptive. Camp is a place where we put aside our make-up, our focus on boys, our focus on ourselves… we are just campers. This is one reason we keep our “whites” for traditions and Sunday afternoon. We do not adorn ourselves but wear the same thing… a simple thing that is beautiful and appreciated. We encourage the girls to be aware of the message of how they present themselves. What they wear sends a message. Very good lesson.

Morning Assembly was a REAL TREAT. Wes King and his boys gave a “mini-concert” and a great devotion. Wes and Fran were married at camp, live in Nashville, and spend their summer vacation on Apple Hill (where their mother has a home). This family is wonderful and precious… and Wes is an amazing songwriter and performer. We play his songs at every morning assembly during the summer. The girls loved meeting him and hearing his story. A great surprise to start our day!

Lunch will be a tasty Jerked Chicken with plantains and risotto. Dinner will be a potato bar, nice and light before the Olympics EP.

It will be a great day. I hope to do a little update after the event. Stay tuned.
