Farewell Main Campers

I am going to post my “Farewell” letter that is on the back page of the Green & Gold. I hesitate to do it because it is like serving literary “leftovers”… but then I remember how much I like leftovers. Meatloaf and pizza are amazing the next day.

I like this re-heating because it still conveys my state of mind on this poignant day. Words do not come easily as the camp drains of life… and that is exactly what it feels like. Campers leave in a rush shortly followed by the counselors. Camp becomes quiet, silent—- it is NOTHING like it has been for the past Thirty one days. Camp is defined by its inhabitants. Campers and counselors make Greystone what it is.

Farewell Main Camp, it has been a pleasure.

The sun is setting on a wonderful summer, filling our hearts with the warm afterglow of so many memories shared. Memories of hot summer days made better by cooling misters and icy treats; memories of cold mountain mornings when we had to bundle ourselves in sweatshirts and jackets to ward off the chill; memories of rainstorms that seemed to never stop and memories of rainstorms that cleared just in time to enjoy a favorite class or evening program. Memories of power outages and picnics, overnights and sleep late Fridays. Each memory is still sharp, full of details that come back with the slightest effort.

The t-shirts that are now packed carefully into trunks or thrown into laundry bags will bring smiles of delight when discovered at home tomorrow. Your face will brighten when a J-Wave sticker unexpectedly falls out of a book, or when you accidently touch a big black moustache in the pocket of your raincoat. You will not let anyone borrow that pink Candy Land pen for you know it is special. Each felt patch, every certificate of achievement will be packed into a treasured place; even years from now they will bring a warm rush of emotion for they will remind you of this summer and your friends.

The girls who sit by you at this moment were provided by God Himself to play a role in your life. Some will remain by your side for fifty years, others will never see you again- but all have changed you for the good. Their “metal” has sharpened your “metal” and you are both better for the contact.

The counselors who have loved you this summer will be role models for a lifetime. Their devotions, read by the glow of a dim flashlight, will remain in your heart forever: bringing needed light when the world has turned dark. Their hugs and words of support will be felt and heard long after you have said good-bye. You might write a long hand written letter of thanks later this fall… maybe even tomorrow… for you will want to convey your feelings. You have noticed and appreciated the how hard they worked and how much they love you.

Thank you for making Greystone shine and thank you for loving this place. It has been a wonderful summer.

Go with your memories kept safely and your friendships cherished… And may the Peace, Love, and Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.

P.S. If you are staying in the area might I suggest the best BBQ joint anywhere… Hubba-Hubba Smokehouse is owned and operated by a Greystone Guy. Starr Teel was a counselor, his sisters attended camp and were also counselors, he is professionally trained as a chef and was at one time our Food Services Director. He opened this BBQ place a couple of years ago and it is amazingly good. Just 5 minutes from camp too!
