Derby Dinner

Rain… Rain upset the plans again this afternoon as a HUGE downpour hit the camp at 4:00 (just as we were about to set up for the picnic). What to do…

Radar indicated a small cell had formed over Greystone and was not moving for at least an hour… so we decided to wait and see. Classes went on as normal while the riders waited at the barn and the kitchen crew took a 1 hour break. At five o’clock the rain stopped and the sun came out… we blew the bugle and the girls started to stroll down to the softball field.

Some decided to not wear their Derby Day finest, others said LOOK AT ME!!! Great people watching opportunity… great photography opportunity as well. Not good for stadium jumping (a sport that requires a very sure footing for safety). Helen postponed the jumping till tomorrow morning, but the girls did show off their horses to the delight of the crowd.

Meanwhile Gervais was setting up the reception in record time. His crew moved with purpose, like a well oiled machine. The tables were dried, covered, set, and filled in 30 minutes. He had kitchen staff working the crowd with appetizers on trays, fruit punch being served from bottomless punch bowls (actually 40 gallon trash cans), and food tables filled to capacity. It was a lovely feast… and now we are about to go to the play.

Camp is like this… often not what we intended but always really great.

Have a great night.
