Thursday--- Already?

Time flies when you are having fun. Truth.

Minutes fly by at camp. I have always known this but with every passing year that fact becomes more and more evident. Maybe it is because I am getting old (fewer days ahead of me than behind, if statistics hold true). As a ten year old, time did not fly by like this… but it did go by faster at camp than anywhere else (except Christmas vacation). I have not even purchased the 4th of July fireworks yet because I have not had time! For weeks I have had it on my “to do” list, but every day just disappears like morning mist on the mountains. It is exhilarating.

The weather is turning hot. Many of you have been suffering through some record breaking heat waves already this week… well, that high pressure system is moving into North Carolina and we are anticipating some record setting heat this weekend. Today is LOVELY, but will be the hottest day so far with a high that approaches 90 degrees. We have prepared some fun surprises to celebrate this change of weather… and we are drinking lots of water and are slathered in sunscreen!

Breakfast Club today continued with the “Social Growth” theme. It is important that we all understand the unique properties of a camp friend… namely: Camp friends are timeless. The roots that are established with a camp friend will last a lifetime. Camp friendships pick up without a problem after an 11 month separation; and do so year after year. By the time a camper has come to camp for 5 to 10 years, she trusts the fact that these camp friendships are here to stay. We encourage the girls to appreciate this fact and to value these friendships. We also encourage the girls to reach out and make friends with unlikely people. Not the “popular” girl, not the “pretty” girl, not the “talented” girl… instead reach out with genuine interest to that “other” girl. We see it happen every day; lives are transformed by friendships that are based on unselfishness (not trying to make ourselves look better). It is a sweet aspect of the camp life.

Tonight will be “Senior Hunt”… it is an active CRAZY EP that is very popular with the girls, especially those Senior campers who are finally given the opportunity to hide from the rest of the campers. We jazz the hunt up with surprises I will not describe. It will be a great change of pace!

Breakfast was French Toast with sausage links… remember that this is homemade bread, real maple syrup… add in some fresh berries, a breakfast you will not beat anywhere.

Lunch is Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches… we get Rib eye Roast and shave the meat thin, griddle fry with peppers and onions, add Monterey Jack cheese while it is on the griddle. The cheese melts into the meat and the onions… YUM. Is this Junk Food? Bring it on!

Dinner will be a huge hit… Cheese and Spinach Ravioli, fresh sugar snap peas (blanched lightly, so they are still crisp), and a big salad. YUM again.

Thank you for your girls. Thank you for “getting” camp (or at least giving us the benefit of the doubt). Thank you for reading… it is a pleasure.

PS A wonderful woman named Edna Cornett was a camper in 1924. She wrote us last year after getting a birthday card (she laughed and laughed, putting the card on her door for all to see). Her zest and love of life are evident in every word of her thank you letter… so this year we sent her a Greystone Alumnae Bag and a stylish Greystone long sleeve t-shirt! She now lives in a wonderful retirement center in Arizona. Her Thank you letter arrived this week… a classy lady. She encourages me… camp; still bringing smiles 88 years later!
