Some Opening Thoughts

Welcome June Camp!

Some of you have never experienced Camp Greystone before. Some of you have been a part of the Greystone family for generations… and now we are all one big June Camp family! Welcome!

My updates every day are intended to flesh out your appreciation of this experience. I give you little details that matter to us (what we’re eating, what the weather feels like, what the evening program is going to be). I also give you a director’s perspective on what good things are happening to the community at large.

I have been doing this my whole life (practically) and I am surrounded by a team with the same level of experience and commitment. We have one focus every day: to make this camp perfect. We do it for the Glory of God and the good of the camper. We can’t wait!

Now might be a good time to mention “imperfection”… for though our goal is a perfect camp, we never deliver on that goal… and that is actually OK. Life is not a perfect setting: there are going to be bumps and difficulties along the way. At camp we embrace the difficulties and overcome. This process leads to maturity and confidence: it is a great outcome of camp and often times is only really experienced in hardship.

If your daughter was sad to see you go; don’t worry. In 93 years of camping, that is a feeling which many have shared. We are very good at helping overcome the initial butterflies and will always let you know if there is anything going on that is negatively impacting your daughters camp experience. She is in good hands!

A big rain storm missed us this morning, instead hitting Greenville South Carolina, just 30 miles south of us. Opening camp in a big rain storm is NOT fun, so we already have something to be thankful for. Move in went smoothly, a well oiled machine that runs well but was just built last week. It has taken about 14 days to get everyone trained, and they are well prepared for the job… but it still remarkable to see them all working together so well so early in the season.

The girls are getting settled in their cabins, have signed up (or are about to sign up) for their classes, have taken (or will soon take) their swim tests, and every one is having a blast getting to know eachother.

Lunch will be a buffet picnic affair with fresh baked bread, smoked turkey, pasta salad, fruit salad, brownies, and sweet tea. Dinner is spaghetti (another tradition) and Evening Program is a counselor skit night where all departments do simple skits to introduce themselves to the campers.

Sleep will come easily tonight for all will be tired. Tomorrow will be our first “real” day of camp and it looks like it is going to be a really good one (the weather looks perfect all week).

Thank you for sharing your girls. It is an honor to have them at Greystone and we will do our best for them.

Jimboy

P.S. I encourage you to leave comments below… your words are helpful to all and spur me on. I become a little obsessed with checking comments during camp, they are jewels of insight and a super encouragement to all. Parents hearing from parents is a wonderful gift… so if you have a thought, do share!
