Tuesday... news from the "bubble

Greetings to all of your unfortunate souls who live your day to day moments outside the “bubble” of camp… I just listened to the news: yuck.

Here, it is possible to “get by” just fine without any awareness of the front page issues of the news. I wonder sometimes which is the more “accurate” perspective.

If Scripture is right, then we have a maximum of about 100 years on THIS earth and an ETERNITY of time in the next. “There will be wars and rumors of wars” during our time here… there will also be sickness, tears, and pain. We must answer the question of what to make of these circumstances. Will the “bad” of this world define us, or will we rise above it to be “more than conquerers” in Christ?

Camp instills a confident perspective on this question. We gain perspective through the simplicity and the community of this place. We unplug (no electronics, facebook, text messages, etc.), we connect (a tightly packed community that lives 24 hours a day 7 days a week together), we require kindness, we pray together 6 times a day, we Glorify God by loving each other… a well rounded perspective just happens.

So I ask again: does camp more accurately reflect what heaven is going to be like? I think that it does.

This is what I hear from campers and counselors, what I see in the faces of the girls, what I hear in the little conversations that surround me. It is the perspective of an interested “outsider”… a man will never really know what it means to be a camper or counselor at Greystone. I am given a ringside seat at the best show around… I see what happens each summer, including some of the “behind the curtain” stuff. It is amazing.

Camp has been spectacular again this year. As we draw to a close I look back. There are a few blog topics that I will not have time to really get into in the next couple of days but you might have interest in reading… so here is a quick link process if you want to explore topics more in depth.

1. Why is camp so expensive?
2. Senior campers at Main Camp.
3. What a 17 year old camper wrote to explain her feelings about camp.
4. Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
5. Why we will limit credit card charges in 2012
6. Why do we limit ages for short sessions

FOOD: Breakfast was something new for a bunch of the girls: TRUCK DRIVERS SPECIAL!!! Home made biscuits with sausage gravy on the side. You might think everyone would say YUCK… and you would be right! They say it, but then we sell it… they try it… and they LOVE it. Really, this southern tradition is drop dead (no pun intended) good. Lunch is smoked turkey sandwiches (remember the smoker, it was “smokin” yesterday). Dinner is Taco in a bag… a picnic dinner before the big Production Night EP. Take a bag of Frito’s, put in taco fixins, shake, eat with a fork. YUM…. the girls go wild over it. Very easy too (hint, hint… do it for the neighborhood or for a class party).

That is it for now. I will get photos at the Ropes Course and Wall this morning. Can’t wait!

WEATHER: Perfection. The highs will be in the 80’s today, even cooler tomorrow. The perfect weather makes for some really great moments, including the campfire/movie night last evening. The sunset was more perfect with the high clouds and campfires by the lake. Our movie was “Tangled”, and as the music played with the girls spread out around the pagent court… it was lovely.
