The Tide Changes

Nothing lasts forever, including heatwaves (thank the Lord). Today we welcome cooler temperatures (highs projected to be 82 degrees), light cloud cover, and a higher chance of rain.

At camp we celebrate weather… living in primative cabins gives us an experience of nature seldom duplicated in the “real” world. We do not isolate ourselves from the “discomfort” of the variety of climate conditions that comprise a normal week. It makes every day stand out in a very physical way. Our senses are impacted by the “whole enchalata” of life: people (we are surrounded by a closely knit densely packed group of wonderful friends and mentors), Setting (the sights, the sounds, the smells, and the climate that God gives us to enjoy in this place), and Program (I include our devotions, food, activities, EP’s)… our senses FEAST on life, and it is very satisfying.

So we are sad to think that today is our last Friday. That we are in the final days is a shocking thing to think about. Since mid-May our world has been defined by this place and these people… to imagine everyone leaving is harder than you think. We love camp, in many ways we wish it would never end! That being said, we also like to make every day count… so we are paying attention to the beauty that surrounds us and hoping the girls notice it as well.

We will enjoy the “Birthday Ball” tonight… a tradition that is as old as camp. My Grandmother was a young child when my Great Grandfather started camp. Her birthday was in the middle of the summer, so birthday plans were in the front of the plans for that first summer. The way we do it is to throw a big party on one day for everyone who has a birthday during the camp session. The girls sit with my mother at a banquet table, decorated with place cards, flowers, and favors… they are served by the head staff and have a big (huge) birthday cake for dessert. The EP is the camper talent show, an incredible variety show featuring the “best” acts from the “mini-talent shows” that have been going on all week. The birthday girls are the guests of honor at the show… they really do like the evening. Everyone is a little more dressed up than normal, it feels like a party!

Classes are in full swing. Cabins are happy and settled. Camp is good and we are enjoying every minute. Thank you for making it possible.

Breakfast today was amazing (at least I thought so): Home Made Corned Beef Hash with scrambled eggs and hash browns… along with the amazing fruit bar and home made granola. Lunch will be a crowd pleaser (I doubt the campers like corned beef hash as much as I do): Hamburgers! We use fresh beef, formed into patties by hand, served with freshly sliced sharp cheddar cheese, thick sliced onions, tomatoes, lettuce… YUM. We also serve sweet potato fries… very tasty. Dinner is a feast of roasted pork, cheese ravioli, tomato pie, roasted veggies, and birthday cake.

Thank you for caring about our little world… camp is a wonderful place, it is worth the attention!
