Summer Days

The sun rises late these days, it also sets early. Daylight hours shrink every day, not noticed for the longest time… but we notice it now. It is dark at 8:30 and light at 7:00; summer is ending and camp is about to become quiet again. The counselors sense it and are soaking in these last days with the girls. It makes for a very sweet camp.

Last night’s Ganza was a wonderful event, a real spotlight of excitement and simple fun. A relaxed program (just playing outside and making s’mores) followed by a relaxed movie under the stars; we blew taps at 10:30, tired and happy.

Today will be a warm one again, carbon copy of yesterday’s weather. High of 88 degrees, low humidity, breeze from the North East. Perfect. Many of you are new parents to Greystone (we have 140 new campers at this session, the most of any of our “regular” sessions). I hope that you are getting a little taste of what camp is all about, that you understand why we are so passionate about it. We hope that you will notice a change in your girls when they return home on Friday, that they have grown here. Camp is much more than fun, it is real. Breakfast club is wrapping up, today we focused on the “Physical” side of having great days. It starts with eating well (no junk food, no snacks except fruit). Tomorrow we focus on exercise and the role it plays in making your days GREAT. The 4-fold way of having a Great Day is easy to remember and easy to do… we start this routine at camp and some of the girls will continue it when they go home. The older they get, the more passionate they embrace the lessons… but some girls really latch onto big time life goals early in their journey. It is encouraging.

Breakfast was simple and good: Scrambled Eggs, sausage, and Hash Browns; but what I want to talk about is the Fruit Bar. We go through about $4,000 worth of produce in a week, all purchased from the local farmers market. Breakfast always features a HUGE fruit bar (Berries, Melons, yogurt, granola, oatmeal). The goal is to never run out of anything, and we usually do it. If it is always there, it is not a big deal… and that is how it feels to me. Never a big deal, but OH SO GOOD!!! The best breakfasts of my entire year are at camp.

Lunch is Ham and Cheese sandwiches (home made bread, crisp lettuce, thick slices of tomato, real cheddar cheese… these are wonderful sandwiches).

Dinner is something you will want to do this winter: Taco in a Bag! Get individual bags of Frito’s, provide all the standard taco ingredients, then the children stuff whatever they like into the bag and shake it up. Eat and Enjoy!Tonight will be our big Production Night EP (two drama productions, and lots of song and dance routines that have been perfected at camp). Excitement is running high, all is well at your North Carolina Home!
