91 years ago, I imagine that Dr. Sevier sat down at his desk on closing day and shed a tear or two. It is a significant accomplishment to finish a summer, in some ways it feels like the culmination of a lifetime of preparation… a well run race is a delight to the spirit. He was a trail blazer, nobody else was running a girls camp at the time (nobody that he knew at least). It was a venture of the heart and a leap of faith… and when it worked, I imagine that he was overwhelmed.
I am overwhelmed today. Camp is so great… read the past couple of months of news stories to get a sense of it. It is great because of the details of every day, every camper, every counselor… and now those details are gone. The silence of this place once the campers leave can not be described. It is so quiet, it reminds me of a winter morning after a big snow… quiet in a natural way that is both beautiful and wrong. Camp should be filled with people, for three months it has been a 7 day a week beehive of activity and joy. Then; nothing. It brings a tear.
Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled to have some “me” time. Tomorrow morning Margaret and i will pack up and take the family to the beach for a week of nothing but fun. Who wouldn’t be excited about that! But at the same time, it is sad to end such a wonderful summer.
Thank you for a wonderful summer. We will be posting stories all year long, so keep checking in. Reserve your space soon… all sessions have wait lists, so if you don’t enroll as an “Early Bird” you will have to wait for a spot to open up.
I hope that you have a wonderful school year.
