Our Second Sunday. The ending of week 2, the beginning of week 3. Full of potential, yet completely laid back… for some, this will be the best day of the summer (so far).
What to do when you don’t HAVE to do anything? Some take full advantage of the freedom, others fall into the pit (start missing home, it goes downhill from there). Today, we give the girls the option of doing nothing all afternoon… but after last night’s EP, I think most will choose well. Most will be drawn to making memories (a canoe adventure, a cabin picture on the water mat, a DMC (deep meaningful conversation) in the shade of a tree. They will set up a “Spa Day” in their cabin, or they will join the huge Ultimate Frisbee game on the pagent court. They will choose well because of the leadership of our 32 “Senior Seniors” who told the camp about why camp matters last night.
Of the 32 girls (entering Senior year of High School), 19 were unable to get through their speech without tears. They cried because they love their friends, love their family (especially sisters, who really shine at camp), love their counselors, and love this place. For many, Greystone has become their home… a fixed point in a world that moves very fast elsewhere. Many girls make their best friends at camp (with campers and counselors alike). Many girls make life changing decisions at camp, deciding to not live like the world but to choose the “narrow” road. Many girls “grow up” at camp. These girls love Greystone with a passion.
This is a wonderful place… really great. We call it “the bubble”, for it appears to be a place untouched by the outside world. Everything appears to change, but camp remains the same. We adults know that this is not true, for everything changes… but the changes are in the lesser areas (people, schedule, traditions, menu, facility, etc.). Our focus on the Lord roots us in the things that matter.
Hotter today (85), sunny… feels like summer. Margaret and I will invite Tentalow 2 up to our house for dinner (last Sunday we had Tentalow 1). This is an effort on our part to share some fun family time with the youngest campers (Tentalows 1- Bungalow 2). We try to work in “Miller Time” with all the groups, Main camp is long enough to do it.
Tonight we will have an outdoor concert: Randall Goodgame has flown in from Nashville to give us a nice concert on the lawn. We will spread out picnic blankets and enjoy the end of a relaxing day with a relaxing EP. The sun will set and the lightning bugs rise as we hang out with our friends in a post card setting. Such moments are wonderful beyond words.
Thank you for reading, even on the weekend.
