This is the first time I have done updates on the news during the summer… a detail that is easily overlooked in the excitement of the moment. Sorry for the delay!
We have finished one session (Junior Camp) and it was amazing. Rained like crazy on opening day, a gully washing downpour just as everyone arrived. Good attitudes and a good sense of humor made it actually pretty fun, but I hope no other opening days go like that this year! You can tell if it was a good session based on the early bird enrollments… already we have 400 campers enrolled for 2010, on pace to start wait lists by July!
June Camp has had a full week of camp and our first Sunday. It is going better than good, partly due to the amazing facility work that the campers are LOVING!!! I checked in on the new Marina earlier this morning and I have to admit that it is great, almost too great. This lakeside complex is way too nice; words don’t give it justice. I used to think the pools were the most over the top thing we ever did… but the marina is just another level of crazy nice and super fun.
It is not very “smart” to build such facilities in a summer camp, but I find it irresistible. The delight of this “postcard location” grows with new facilities. The delight grows with new landscaping. The delight grows with whimsical surprises… and camp is at it’s heart all about delight. Now it is hot, we sometimes get our feelings hurt, we sometimes don’t feel good, sometimes we are in a bad mood… but such things are overcome by the cumulative delight of a carefully constructed experience. We never get it perfect, thus the quest…
Photos are above… if you click on the right side picture it scrolls over to a new picture. I have discovered that lots of people don’t know that there are lots of pictures up there!
Thanks for reading.
