You’re not going to believe what we “re-found” today! Lell found a journal that Jimboy had given her this summer from someone who was a camper in 1920. It has the name Dorothy Sprague in the front cover. This is her entry from Saturday, July 10, 1920. There are a few other entries in it as well, so we’ll post those soon!
“I got up at about 6:30 this morning and we had breakfast at 7:30. We had coffee, hominy, eggs and bacon, and biscuits. After breakfast we cleaned up our room and then wrote letters the rest of the morning, excepting for a few minutes while Miss Ruland was getting the names of the horseback riders. Dot Moore, another girl, and myself were to ride together.
We had our dinner at 10:30 of corn bread, grits, and black berries. After dinner during rest hour it began to rain and we didn’t have a chance to ride. The store also opened just after dinner with chocolate candy, mints, chewing gum, stationary, and cakes but by the time I had gotten some money there was nothing left but gum and marshmallows.
We had a fine time on the porch of the lodge just before supper. Miss Venia was there and she sang for us and then we sang some. We also played games in the lodge room on the porch. After supper of eggs, corn, grits, apple sauce and biscuit, we all gathered in the lodge room for the names contest. We had to use lamps because the electricity didn’t get up the hill. We came to the lodge room with a paper pinned to our backs and a pencil.
Dr. and Mrs. Sevier were given the seats of honor in the front of the fire place and two girls would come out at a time and introduce each other and saying why they had come to camp. After that we would whisper in a girl’s ear her name and then if it was right, we would write our own name on her back. Pocahontas was found to be the best known girl in camp.
We gave some yells and sang some songs before we went to bed.”
