The Prize

My father motivated the campers to run Stumblers every Sunday morning by saying: You have to pay the PRICE for the Promise of the Prize. The prize was always a t-shirt (always a big motivator of campers) and the price was running or walking three miles. Today is prize day!

The girls showed up in large numbers (about 400) to get this year’s 30th anniversary Stumblers T-Shirt, and the price was certainly worth the prize. These are nice shirts, the nicest shirts we have done in a while… very soft and very thin, they are super comfortable and great for exercise. I am proud to send them out into the world!

Today is still cloudy, but it is no longer raining. The forecast calls for possible rain showers all day long, but the chances of rain have dropped to 50% from the 100% yesterday. The temperatures have risen as well, from a high of 63 yesterday to 73 today. It feels wonderful, the perfect weather for a relaxed morning and an afternoon of watersports fun.

We will spend the afternoon in team competition, have our tnormal picnic dinner, then enjoy the water show this evening. You may tune into the watershow starting at 7:00 this evening. It going to be a GREAT DAY!

Last nights Council Fire was held in the Pavilion, with rain lightly falling as we met for our last “fire” of Main Camp. The “important thing” I spoke on was unselfishness (the secret of Greystone), starting the talk with the fable of the greedy neighbor. The story goes like this: There was once a very greedy man who was given a gift from the gods… he would be granted one wish, but there was a catch. His neighbor would be given double what the man asked. He thought and he thought, ultimately dispairing… for he could not abide the thought of his neighbor having more than he. So in frustration he asked that he have 1 eye blinded.

To be selfish is to be greedy… unselfishness is the opposite. My encouragement to the girls was to always delight in the good fortune, gifts, honors, and attributes of others. Love others without regard to what is your due, what is your right, or what you wish you had. Deep satisfaction and joy lies in the path of unselfishness. It is a wonderful lesson, and the girls are learning it well.

Thank you for your continued support and friendship. I feel like we are family… you are like distant cousins that I never see but think very fondly of every day. Your girls are representing your family very well. Such a delight to know them and to enjoy camp with them… thanks again for making it possible to have this “miracle in the mountains”.
