Soak it up

The ground had gotten parched over the past month at camp. While we have had the occasional rain shower, nothing substantial enough to really soften the soil on the front lawn. We have irrigation, but in the midst of Main Camp Madness we often forgot to re-program the complicated controller. In the back of our minds, we always expected it to rain soon (if not that night then the next afternoon). Our expectations have finally been rewarded in full!

We expected rain today, and it looks like that is exactly what we will get. Rain all day! The ground is very glad for this soaking rain, but so are the campers. We will now have a vivid memory of a cold rainy day of classes (all you old Greystone girls have similar memories). We will have memories of a rest hour spent warm and cozy, sunggled under two blankets as the rain falls on the tin roof. Card games played on the floor, books read on the bed… these are the memories that I most keenly remember of my days as a camper at Falling Creek. Memories of childhood that are valuable indeed.

The girls are very content and happy. The rising tide of the camp “ocean” is carrying us along in its grip. We sit through 100 minute EP’s with delight (the Production Night last night was a record length), we endure wet sweat shirts and shoes during a 60 degree morning with a big smile (sometimes skipping, almost always arm in arm), and we laugh at the Breakfast Club joke (no matter that the punchline is well known by all). It is a wonderful time to be a camper.

We will have a long rest hour this afternoon, enjoy Council Fire in the Pavilion (unless the rain peters out), and make a bunch of memories. Tomorrow will include our final Stumblers, Worship Service, a big afternoon of Watersports Challenges, and a lovely evening Water Show (that we will livestream starting at 7).

This is the homestretch of our race. Campers, Counselors, Head Staff, and Directors all have very particular details that they are keen to accomplish in the days that are left. We are very happy in our work!
