Camp Greystone is accredited by the American Camp Association.
A letter from Jennifer Valentine Pharr
After attending camp in the 1990’s as a camper and serving as a counselor in 2001 and 2002, I am pleased to return to camp this fall and serve in the office of Alumnae Relations and Archives.
At camp we are looking forward to many exciting developments to help alumnae stay in touch with one another and abreast with activities and offerings at Greystone. In particular we are hoping to set up more exhibit space around camp in climate controlled areas to exhibit past memorabilia including photos, letters, patch jackets, and even an original camp uniform from the 1920’s. We are also looking forward to transferring a large part of our stored records and images to a digital database which eventually can lead into multimedia audio-visual presentations and interactive records. If any alumna has cherished camp letters, photos, or artifacts they would care to donate to this effort, we would welcome the gift; all artifacts sent to camp with be cared for and greatly appreciated.
As part of my role at camp, I am also hoping to refresh the alumnae section of the Greystone web-site and keep it current with up-to-date information on previous campers and counselors. In order to keep alumnae involved with camp and in contact with each other we are going to begin offering post-camp clubs and honors, starting with the inauguration of the Greystone Running Club. Many women discovered a love for running and exercise as young girls participating in Camp Stumblers, just this fall Greystone proudly saw 9 alumnae meet for a camp reunion at the Portland Marathon where 4 alumnae completed the full 26.2 miles and 5 others finished the 13.1 mile half marathon. By keeping records of training and race results on the web-site we hope to encourage past Greystone campers and counselors to stay active and stay in-touch. Although, the criteria is yet to be determined at the time of this newsletter, Jimboy and Jimdaddy want to reward goal-setting and races completed with recognition and honorary Greystone Running Club T-shirts and paraphernalia. More information on this club other exciting ways to stay involved with Greystone philosophy and friends should be on the web-site by Christmas.
In a further attempt to reach out to past camp participants, Greystone would like to supplement the annual winter alumnae newsletter, with a spring and fall e-newsletter. In order to receive the e-newsletter, please take 5-minutes to access the Greystone website and fill in the alumnae “update” page with your current information and e-mail address. Our first e-newsletter should go out this spring.
If anyone should have any questions about our progress in furthering the extent of alumnae relations and recording and preserving camp history then please feel free to or call and ask for me at the Greystone office 828-693-3182.
I look forward to hearing from you all and keeping in touch with you in the near future.
All the best,
Jennifer Valentine Pharr
